THE GUARDIAN Monday May 16 1994 SPORTS NEWS 19 First Division, semi-finals, first leg: Derby County 2, Miliwall 0 Cowans finds thin end of the wedge Stephan Blerfoy man central wedge of Stevens, Van den Hauwe and Emblem. It was the first time they had employed the formation this season and the players involved looked far from comfortable. It was no surprise when Derby took the lead after 20 minutes, only that the scorer was Cowans, whose last goal was 19 months previously for Blackburn Rovers in the 7-1 victory over Norwich. Simpson hit the post after Johnson had crossed from the left and, when Keller failed to take the rebound. Cowans struck low and true.

The rest of the half was a disappointment for the home fans, who always make the Baseball Ground one of football's most vibrant cockpits, but Derby came out after the interval like men possessed. They were unfortunate Johnson and Gabbia-dini missed horribly; fortunate that Mitchell, with Miliwall colleagues unmarked, failed to get a cross in from the right Simmering animosity boiled into a brawl which saw Gabbia-dini and Harkes booked. Derby might have lost their way here but on the hour Gabbiadini released Johnson, who had so much time that even he could not miss. Miliwall abandoned their defensive experiment, returning to a flat back four, which continued to be outpaced by Johnson and Gabbiadini, the latter again missing a wonderful opportunity for a third goal. Towards the end there were signs of Miliwall finding form and, having lost only one home league match this season, they will retain hopes of turning matters round on Wednesday.

But it will be a hard task. Though Derby look a long way off the genuine Premiership article, there is a passion in the town for its football which deserves the top flight. But they will not be able to afford missing chances as they did here. Detby County! Taylor: Charles, Forsyth, Harkes. Short, Williams, Cowans, Johnson, Gabbiadini, Pembrldge.

Simpson. Mlltwalli Kellor; Cunningham, Huxford, Hurtock. Emblem (Kerr, 64mln), Stevens, Reo, Van den Hauwe, Goodman, Mltcholl (Moraloo, 64), Barber RoforMi Durkin (Portland). ERBY COUNTY, for all the money spent, remain a team that promise more than they deliver. Nevertheless goals from Cowans, his first for the club, and Johnson will probably see them through to the play-off finals.

Miliwall, at one time contending for automatic promotion, faded towards the end of the season when they lost the knack of scoring. Rarely yesterday afternoon did they seem capable of penetrating Derby's sturdy defences, although a last-minute free-kick by Rae, heavily deflected, almost scuttled past Taylor. Had it gone in, Miliwall would have returned home with misplaced confidence. Derby had enough chances, particularly in the second half, to sign, seal and deliver their Wembley place. Gabbiadini and Johnson were profligate.

MUlwall, intent on thwarting the Derby attack, set up a three- Tranmere Rovers 0, Even Nevin's sorcery cannot get Tranmere off the ground Flying Frenchman Eric Cantona rises to the occasion on the way to causing Chelsea double trouble at Wembley on Saturday PHOTOGRAPH: TOM JENKINS Matthew Engel finds relief from boredom and a dripping Wembley roof with Newton's foul on Irwin Thank heavens for a magic half-hour Cynthia Gate man ONLY one place, one point and three goals separated these two at the end of the season, and they meet again at Filbert Street on Wednesday night with the scores level. But Tranmere must be ahead in spirit and confidence after dominating at Prenton Park. These two, both veteran playoff protagonists, locked horns to battle for a piece of Premiership territory in true do-or-die fashion. Prenton Park buzzed in anticipation of an exciting afternoon. In that respect no one was disappointed.

Aldridge was first to hare out of the tunnel, chased by a teenage mascot who could not catch him. Leicester's centre-half Carey did rather better. Carey, who began his career with Manchester United, stuck like chewing gum to Aldridge, who has scored a hat-trick in every season in the English AFTER 56 minutes and 23 seconds of this match (Rupert-TV's one great service to mankind is to force all channels to keep this vital information permanently on screen), an official came into the Wembley press box to announce that the attendance was 79,634. In the old days this would have been unthinkable. Everybody knew that 100,000 people attended the FA Cup final.

Heaven knows if it was literally true but it was an established fact, just as there were 24 hours in a day, seven days in a week and until Spurs in 1961 no club had won the Double this century. At that stage this year's final was crashingly dull, quite the dreariest since last year when er-um played inner, and the year before that when ditto. Nothing remotely memorable had happened on this oc casion since the year when Paul Gascoigne and Brian Clough, in their different ways, self-destructed; and that was not a pretty sight. So one began to wonder what had gone wrong with Cup finals in general and if Wembley now holds 80,000 with the 366 missing people. Had they been arrested? Stuck in a jam on the Ml? Or just sufficiently blase about this sequence of lousy matches to wake up and decide that they would stay at home instead? It seemed reasonable to start thinking that what was once football's peerless set piece was joining other declining British institutions such as the Derby and the monarchy, strangled because there are too many Wembley finals and quasi-finals and none of them is all that special.

The mood was encouraged by a series of substantial raindrops that were finding their way through the roof of our Great National Stadium and scoring a direct hit on my head. These lines of thought lasted precisely four minutes 26 seconds until Newton fouled Irwin and United won their first penalty. We prefer not to go in for ethnic stereotyping on these pages but it has to be said that Cantona took it with an insouciance reminiscent of Henri-Leconte strolling up from the baseline and executing one of his perfect forehand winners. From then on the match had a dream-like or nightmarish quality, depending on whom you supported, though for one team to win 4-0 and the other to come away with a passably legitimate whinge seems something close to the perfect result. But now the Double has not been won this century except Shilton eyes Wembley return Barton earns his first England call-up, Barry spring a Welsh Cup shock Leicester City 0 leagues except this one, and has at most two games left to break the duck.

While Carey tried to keep Aldridge quiet, his team-mates were having a much more difficult time with Nevin, who looked determined single-handedly to drag Tranmere into the Premiership. Both sides hurled themselves into the contest with ferocity and enthusiasm; hot-blooded tackling, fearsome challenges, whirling dervish wing runs. "Would you all take one step to your right?" requested the Tan-noy of the crowded terrace. If only Tranmere's Irons had done so in the second minute a shot that skimmed wide might have changed their destiny. As it was, after Tranmere's first flurry, Leicester settled into the game and had the greater possession in the first half-hour without creating many chances.

Nevin's devastating passing constantly supplied Tranmere's forward men, who kept the Leicester goal In the other semi-final York, who last season won the Third Division play-offs, left themselves with an uphill struggle in the second leg this season after only drawing 0-0 at home to Stockport York muffed three clear chances while Flynn had a header cleared off the line for Stockport, who know that failure to win promotion would make it hard to resist offers for their 62-goal strikers Andy Preece and Kevin Francis. Leicester, without seven of their first-choice players at the start, lost Gee soon after the interval and were forced to abandon all attempts to go forward, opting instead to hold out for a draw. Haddock retired before the start of the seventh round. into a team as classy as this one? And yet this Double has come perhaps a little too easily. The Arsenal Double (1971) was never the same as Spurs'; people sensed they were nowhere near as good.

Liverpool's (1986) was just last amid their years of success. There is a logical reason for this since it is now virtually impossible for a team outside a big city or lacking bottomless subsidy from a sentimental squillionaire to win the League. So the Double is likely to happen more often. Now, in the second year of a united dynasty which looks as though it could run for ages, there is little new that English football can offer them. The only peaks to conquer are in Europe and beyond.

Let us hope they give the world the excitement they gave us in the last half-hour on Saturday. tional defender Miroslav Djukic missed a last-minute penalty against Valencia on Saturday that "ould have given Depor-tivo La Corona their first title. It is a funny thing but though the brain cells are dying every day the names of that Spurs team are there forever. Perhaps it was the rugged old-fashioned names: Brown, White, Smith and Jones for monosyllabic starters and six solid duosyllables: Baker, Henry, Norman, Mackay, Dyson and Allen, with one fancy-dan name for the fancy-dan player, Blanch-flower, who was sui generis anyway. Somehow a teamsheet that starts with four successive consonants does not commit itself so easily to memory. And yet Manchester United's football, when it came, was delicious, a mixture of individual wit and teamwork.

When was there last a moment of such beautiful unselfishness as Ince's refusal to score the final goal? Could big Bobby Smith have fitted Abacus League champions, who also included the former Welsh international Alan Curtis and the former England Under-21 international Keith Bertschin.
