THE GUARDIAN Monday May 14 1990 SPORTS NEWS 13 Soccer: the play-offs Second DivisionzBlackburn Rovers 1 Swindon Town 2 ner by Jones in the 55th min Stsphsn Bfoftoy Blackburn anything. They Anally showed some conviction after Kennedy's goal, but were otherwise overshadowed by Swindon's imaginative play. Swindon took the lead on the half-hour when Kerslake created an opening on the right McLoughlin was poised to shoot but had the ball eagerly whipped from him by White, who scored his 26th goal of the season with some emphasis. With MacLaren extremely effective in front of Swindon's back four, Rovers could find no way through, although Garner was given little support by a subdued Stapleton and a strangely ineffective Sellars. Gennoe twice fumbled the ball as Swindon pressed forward in the second half.

Both times he survived, but there was nothing he could do about Swindon's second goal. The ball was cleared well enough by the INCE again, it appears, Ossie is on his way to Wembley. Whether his knees have gone all trembly, however, is unrecorded. In fact the affable Mr Ar-diles greeted Swindon's deserved victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park yesterday afternoon with a thoughtful, slightly quizzical, scratch of his chin. Perhaps the Swindon manager, who played briefly for Blackburn at the fag-end of his career, would have been a little more animated had Kennedy not pulled back a goal in the 73rd minute which gives Rovers at least a flicker of hope.

For both sides this was their third successive play-off, both having lost to Crystal Palace last year. The experience seemed not to have taught Sunderland 0, Newcastle United 0 (Hardy man out of after late sending The thigh's the limit Bradford Northern's Cordle pulls Offiah's leg, but Widnes, 28-6 victors, had the last laugh at Old Trafford. photograph: chris tofalos Stones Sitter Premiership Trophy final: Widnes 28, Bradford Northern 6 Gouging overshadows Widnes triumph Cynthia Batsman SUNDERLAND'S Paul VCHardyman will miss the Vrest of his club's play-off challenge after being sent off yesterday following his unsuccessful penalty in the injury time of a fractious derby that also saw seven men booked. Seconds after seeing Newcastle's 38-year-old John Burridge dive to stop his low spot-kick, Hardyman was dismissed for lunging at the prone goalkeeper. Under play-off rules, he is ruled out of the second leg at St James' Park on Wednesday and, should Sunderland win, the Second Division final at Wembley on May 28.

What was billed as the cup final of the north was a ill-tempered fracas which failed to produce a single shot on target over the 90 minutes. The match was beamed to ticketless Newcastle supporters watching at Whitley Bay ice rink. But it was at Roker Park I general astonishment, was ushering Paul Hulme to the dressing room. Two fingers pointing towards the eyes indicated the offence, which Mr Morris later confirmed. Doug Laughton, the Widnes coach, questioned how Hulme could have gouged anyone with the ball in his hands.

If Hulme did do it, he did it with astonishing swiftness. Paul Medley, the alleged victim, showed no signs of outrage or discomfort. A strange business. A little sad, too, for Widnes were brilliant, far too quick and inventive for a stereotyped Bradford side who showed no rington forward, was suspended for IS months by the Australian judiciary for a similar offence six years ago. It is difficult to recall a similar case here, but if found guilty Hulme can expect heavy punishment.

At first, it seemed that Hulme was victim rather than assailant Three Bradford players converged on him in the tackle and when the players separated Hulme was lying face down on the turf. The touch-judge, meanwhile, had come on to the field and the first player the referee summoned was David Hobbs. But suddenly, Mr Morr to Paul niffMlffok WIDNES won their third successive Premiership Trophy final when they beat Bradford Northern 28-6 at Old Trafford yesterday in the exciting style which has frequently eluded them this season. Their impressive play, unfor tunately, is likely to cause less discussion than the sending off just before half-time of their scrum half, Paul Hulme, for the rare almost unheard of offence of gouging. Les Boyd, the former War more signs of containing 12 opponents than they did 13.

The Widnes peaks this season have been intermittent but there have been strong signs as the team has drawn close to its former excellence. Bradford suffered the full blast By half-time, tries from Holli-day and the splendid Tait, the man of the match, had helped bring Widnes a 10-0 lead, but, of course, Widnes were then down to 12 men. Could Bradford take advantage? They could not Their support among the 40,796 crowd was lukewarm. Sunderland's Bracewell, whose skills are wasted in such company, and the jaw-clenched Armstrong tried, mostly in vain, to find Gabbiadini, who wasted his best chance when he chose to pass instead of shoot.

Smith's team will not be afraid to go to Newcastle. They have won six of their last seven away games, and have a record on their travels second only to Sheffield United in the division. But they will be without Ran-son, who pulled a hamstring. The Sunderland manager will not be disciplining Hardyman. "The lad is distressed enough as it is," said Smith.

Fourth Division: Cambridge United 1 Maidstone United 1 Maidstone's touch of Gall is just in time lanRMtoy HIGH-NOON football suited neither players nor spectators in a messy play-off at a surprisingly docile Abbey Stadium yesterday, though Maidstone United not unexpectedly perhaps with Gary Cooper at left-back adapted the better. Having created the majority of chances, it took the team seeking elevation in their first League season 89 minutes to secure the goal they deserved, however, and begin Wednesday's second leg at Dartford on level terms. The prize for the winners is a place at Wembley in the Fourth Division final on Saturday week.

Maidstone's last gasp came from Gall, who had hitherto been the culprit. He had enlivened a dull first half the players are probably more used to getting home from church or tuning in to Westminster Week at such an hour with his pace which took him behind the solid but occasionally ponderous Chappie and Daish. Twice he was free for headers, Vaughan saving once and the other going over, and only Dublin volley, which Johns saved, gave Cambridge the appearance, of the side which excitingly eliminated Millwall and Bristol City from the FA Cup this season. Against the flow, Cambridge took the lead after 51 minutes when Golley was judged to have handled Philpot's free- kick and Cheetham struck home the penalty. Maidstone responded with the greater desire, the introduction of Sorrell injecting pace.

It seemed, though, that when, five minutes from time, Vaughan turned aside Gall's shot from close ranee, Dublin completing the clearance on the line, Maidstone would be in debit. Then Sorrell long throw was headed on to his own bar by Dublin and the little striker snapped up the rebound for his 27th goal of the season. Finally, Maidstone did have the Gall. Colin Clarke, the Queen's Park Rangers striker, has pulled out of the Northern Ire land squad to play Uruguay on Thursday with a knee injury. Blackburn defence after a cor that tempers needed cooling as five Newcastle players and one from Sunderland were booked.

Despite the home side's fewer cautions, Newcastle's manager Jim Smith accused Sunderland of being "too fired up" and, in a claim that some of their players took dives, added: "I think Armstrong, Bennett and Gates have been training in a swimming pool. "Most of the bookings on our side were for unprofessional tackles. One of the things we couldn't afford to do, and they were trying to make us do, was to lose our heads." Newcastle's left-back Stimson was responsible for the penalty when he tripped Gabbiadini two minutes into injury time. Before the penalty was taken, Stimson was booked for chasing a linesman. That epitomised this sorry saga.

Neither side could overcome the midfield impasse and find a route to the strikers through terrier-like tackling. Newcastle's much-vaunted Yesterday both were high kickers. The ball was seldom on the ground and seldom under control. The approach of both sides was lace-and-chase, betraying the tension. Thompson alone seemed to consider his distribution.

Bolton scored first, after 12 minutes, from a penalty cunningly won but needlessly conceded. Platnauer, having intercepted a pass to Storer on the right, let the ball run away to the winger, who was then clear. As Storer entered the penalty area he hesitated, scorning the quick cross and tempting Platnauer to an injudicious lunge. Philliskirk did the rest, step ping up to score his 25th goal of the season. County equalised shortly before the interval.

In the 71st minute, John Ryan hit the fourth with the visitors' defence in disarray. Stockport will need to show similarly inspired marksmanship to turn the tie around at Edgeley Park on Wednesday. Superb goalkeeping from Bury's Gary Kelly and Eric Nixon of Tranmere ensured a goalless draw at Gigg Lane in their Third Division opening leg. Ronnie Whelan has withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland squad for Wednesday's Liam Brady testimonial game with Finland. The Liverpool midfielder has an ankle injury and is expected to be out for at least another fortnight.

But Jack Charlton says: "There is no danger of him not being available for the World Cup." Chris Morris, Celtic's fullback, has also pulled out of the Irish squad with ankle trouble. JarMnyAtoxandaMr NOTTS COUNTY will be pleased with a draw at Burnden Park yesterday for the away goal may gain in value after Wednesday's second leg. Bolton, too, will be pleased but only with the crowd of 15,108, more than double their average. Money, after all, is the main object and sole justification of the play-off exercise. Bolton indeed could feel themselves fortunate still to be contending for the Second Division, having finished closer to automatic relegation than automatic promotion.

County could feel a sense of injustice in playing a side they headed by 18 points. Rightly they finished the game well on top and Johnson, given the chance of a second-half hat-trick, scuffed all three opportunities. They will be confident though, that their momentum is back after a fractious and fragmented first half. They came to the game on the back of a fine run since losing 3-0 to Bolton on March 10. That result saw Bolton only a point behind County.

Thereafter Bolton took 14 points from 15 games and County 31 from 14. If Bolton are Trotters, County were certainly gallopers. spire them and Widnes tore them to pieces with a second try from Tait and two touchdowns in three minutes from Andy Currier. The winger struck first in the 38th minute with a powerful header, then hooked home just before half-time after a cross from John Chiedozie.

The pair combined magnificently in the 55th minute with Plummer 17-minute treble.
