THE GUARDIAN Monday June 8 1992 Soccer David Lacey on the latest setback to Graham Taylor's plans for the European Championship one which threatens to undermine England's sweeper system Wright injury puts Adams on stand-by 14 SPORTS NEWS I Wright seeing specialist Adams change of fortune noyed Bobby Robson by pulling out with a strain on the eve of England's final European Championship game, the 3-1 defeat against the Soviet Union in Frankfurt which completed a whitewash for Robson's team. Adams, turned inside out by Van Basten when England lost 3-1 to Holland in Dussel-dorf three days earlier to go out of the tournament, provided a crumb of comfort by scoring in Frankfurt. But the Arsenal player's defensive frailties at international level have been exposed too often for England to take much comfort from the present situation. blind-side run for the goal that brought Jack Charlton's side a 1-1 draw. While Adams's presence would still give England defensive power in the air, the loss of Wright would effectively foul up Taylor's plans to employ a sweeper system in the European Championship.

Wright, as he showed in Finland last Wednesday, is hardly a Barest or a Blanc, and at Liverpool he is not exactly another Hansen, but all things are relative and he is more comfortable on the ball than his England contemporaries and does not regard the halfway line as the point of no return. TONY ADAMS, who must have wondered if he would ever wear an England shirt again, is now standing by to join Graham Taylor's European Championship squad. Mark Wright has suffered a recurrence of an Achilles tendon injury and Taylor is awaiting the verdict of a specialist on whether there is any point in his travelling to Sweden. Beyond that, of course, lies the small matter of getting Uefa to agree to a third England replacement a week after the stipulated deadline for squad selections. Here Taylor must be pushing his already been scanned and X-rayed to provide England with evidence to present to Uefa should they want to call in Adams.

The Arsenal captain, on stand-by for the 1990 World Cup but kept out when Wright reported fit at the last minute, will need no second bidding to resurrect his international career. "His reaction was firm and positive," said Taylor. "When we last saw him he was leaving the England camp to have a hernia operation." No sooner had Adams heard the news yesterday than he hurried off to his Whether or not Wright's England career has reached a similar stage remains to be seen. Having played only once for Taylor this season because of injury, he chose to miss the friendly in Hungary in order to lead Liverpool's FA Cup celebrations. Now he is on the point of pulling out again.

While not questioning the genuineness of Wright's injury, Taylor yesterday expressed surprise that he did not hear about it until returning home on Saturday afternoon having watched France play Holland in Lens on Friday night. Four years ago Wright an luck, having already been allowed to bring in Andy Sin-ton and Keith Curie for the injured John Barnes and Gary Stevens. "We will wait and see what the specialist says before deciding whether Mark will be able to take part in the championship," said Taylor yesterday as the rest of the England players flew to Malmo before travelling to their training headquarters at nearby Lund. They play Denmark on Thursday. "There is no way he will be fit for the first stage of the tournament and it may be worse than that," Taylor added.

Wright's injury has local church in Essex. Maybe he offered thanks to the Almighty, accompanied by a small prayer not to meet Marco van Basten again without divine intervention. In fact Adams was seeing a vicar in Hornchurch to discuss preparations for his wedding next month. Adams last appeared for England in the European Championship qualifier against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley in March last year. In that match he played alongside Wright as Taylor attempted to counter the aerial threat of Niall Quinn.

But it was Adams who was caught by Quinn's League in line for new 11 2m TV deal Martin Thorpe lower-division clubs is partly based on the fact that more people pay to see Second, Third and Fourth Division games than they do First Division matches. Also clubs will be able to advertise during their televi-sised games. In the next three weeks the League hopes to settle how many live games will be on ITV next season and how much extra cash that will bring to the clubs. The 25 million the League has agreed was only for recorded highlights plus the semi-finals and final of the RumbelowsCup. It is understood that ITV will show far more live Sunday games than last season as apart of an aggressive campaign to challenge BSkyB's Premier League coverage.

However, the League has ruled out any games being shown live on Mondays when, controversially, some Premier League games are scheduled to be screened. THE revamped Football League could receive an extra 10-12 million a year in television cash if a satellite deal currently under negotiation goes through. The League, which has already signed a 25 million four-year deal with ITV, has been in talks for some weeks with Full Time Communications to sell live and recorded rights to games that would be shown on a 24-hour channel to be set-up in about 18 months. FTC is currently in talks with potential backers and hopes to go back to the League within two weeks with a package that can be put to the clubs, eager for cash following the Premier League breakaway. The idea is for live games to be shown on the subscription channel plus recorded highlights of every game in the League.

FTC's confidence in the interest of the supporters of US hero Harkes chased by Villa Cynthia BnUwnan in Boston had taken the lead through Bag-gio's long-range strike. But kes's ability to squeeze a shot in ASTON VILLA want to sign the Sheffield Wednesday utility player John Harkes and, having al ready made two 1 million bids, they could follow with another Milk round SlavomirHegerof Czechoslovakia leads the riders off on the 50-mile circuit race around Lincoln PHOTOGRAPH: RICHARD RAYNER after he scored the goal that gave the United States victory in the four-nation US Cup 92. The offers from Ron Atkinson Economic cycle sours Henry's Milk Race celebration were revealed yesterday by Harkes, who was originally signed by Big Ron when he was manager at Wednesday. They were made last season and both were turned down. But with the player about to negotiate a new Graham Snowdon acclaims the unlikely amateur hero from Belfast now facing reality after the ride of his life a crowaea penalty area gave the US the equaliser.

It was Harkes's second goal of the tournament. He and Roy Wegerle of Blackburn Rovers were largely responsible for the US's 3-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland which set this World Cup taster off to a flying start a week last Saturday. Wegerle, whose club future is also unclear with reports that Blackburn are willing to sell him at a cut price of 500,000, scored the goal in the 1-0 victory by the US over Portugal. The Republic won their final game 2-0 against Portugal in front of an astonishingly large Irish-dominated Boston crowd of 41,227. Goals from Staunton and Coyne prevented them finishing last in the tournament.

The Huddersfield striker Iwan Roberts was sent-off as Wales held on to their 1-0 lead-to beat Japan in the final match' of the Kirin Invitation Cup in Matsuyama. Mark Bowen's goal in the 39th minute gave Wales their first international contract at the Yorkshire club, Atkinson may want to make another move quickly, especially after Harkes said yesterday: "I should like to play for Ron because he is a brilliant manager." The Americans won their sight of the finish when Verbeken made his escape prior to a Hot Spot sprint, which carried a three-second bonus, on the 12th of 20 laps of the Lincoln circuit. The Belgian continued alone, and when his lead rose to two minutes, he seemingly had the race in the bag since a 15sec bonus awaited the stage winner. "I didn't even know who it was in the lead," admitted Henry. "The first time I realised I ought to start chasing was when people started shouting time checks at me, and then my team manager shouted that I was losing it.

"I just had to try and close it as much as I could." That he did and, although Banana-MET's Chris Lilly-white won the sprint for second place from Lars Mi-chaelsen, the Danish amateur, lmin 31sec behind Verbeken, Henry was happy to come in with Willems, a further two seconds back. The main losers were Banana-MET, with Verbeken edging out Neil Hoban for third place. Chris Boardman, who a week ago broke the British record with 47min 19sec, yesterday scored his fourth successive win in the national 25-mile championship, covering a course at Cockermouth, Cumbria, in 50.04. early in the race, went perilously close to wiping out a 2min 15sec deficit. Henry described it as "another savage day," but somehow found the strength to chase as Verbeken's lead widened to two minutes while, as in previous stages, Henry's support fell away in the second half of the race.

The Irish riders did what they could each day to help protect bis precarious lead, and on sometimes they more than rose to the occasion. But, in the end, it was Henry's sheer guts and determination to mark every move that kept him in yellow. By his own admission, he almost slipped up within showpiece tournament to the surprise of almost everyone, not least themselves and the CONOR HENRY, virtually unknown before assuming the yellow jersey at the start of the second week, was being dubbed the new Sean Kelly after his remarkable victory in the Milk Race. However, the 21-year-old Belfast rider, who was competing for an all-Ireland amateur team in the round-Britain event, may find his ambitions thwarted by the current recession. Today will be business as usual as Henry, who has been racing in France as an amateur for the past three seasons, competes in a single-day event there.

After seeing off the challenge of the two strongest professional teams in the Milk Race, Collstrop-Histor (Belgium) and Banana-MET (Britain), Henry said: "I would like to turn professional, but it is very difficult to get a team place these days, especially in France where there are only two or three teams. I don't think I'll be turning just yet unless Banana-MET are looking for a new man." After 1,150 miles' racing, Henry retained his 19sec margin over Collstrop's Willy Willems when the event ended with a 50-mile race in Lincoln on Saturday. But, in contrast to some years when the final stage has been little more than a procession, the outcome was uncertain until the last couple of miles. Henry fought back to limit his losses as Willems's team-mate Peter Verbeken, himself in yellow American public. They led throughout and finished unbeaten, a point ahead of Italy.

Harkes scored the goal Sat urday's final against Italy in front of 29,000 at Soldier Field, Chicago, that gave his team a win in five games and seven months. In January when Real were top and eight points clear of Barcelona, they controversially sacked their coach, the former Luton player Raddy Antic, and replaced him with the veteran Leo Beenhakker fearing the relatively inexperienced Yugoslav could not keep up the pace. But though Real stayed top, they won only one more away game and yesterday their decision to sack Antic rebounded on them when they lost 3-2 at mid-table Tenerife to throw away the championship a draw would have won.
