16 SPORTS NEWS THE GUARDIAN Thursday May 25 1989 European Cup final: Milan 4, Bucharest 0 Milan's Button double ttreatt David Lacey In Barcelona Milan, by comparison, played to the manner born and needed a minimum of rehearsal before dismantling the Steaua defence. For a few minutes they ran into determined, not to mention painful, tackles but once Dona-doni and Tassotti had spread the wings large gaps appeared in the Bucharest covering. In the 18th minute Gullit initiated a movement which saw Colombo exchange passes on the right with Tassotti before sending in a firm shot which Lung blocked but could not hold. As the predators bore down on the loose ball, Lung and Bumbescu went for it together, collided and watched helplessly as Gullit tapped the opening goal into an empty net. Nine minutes later Lung and the defence stood gaping as Tas-sotti's high cross from the right hung in the air and Van Basten, unchallenged, almost jumped too late but still nodded the ball in.

In the 38th minute Gullit controlled Donadoni's waist-high centre from the left with an almost disdainful first-time touch and, with the defenders practically bowing their obeisance, scored Milan's third goal with a superb volley. In the first minute of the second half Rijkaard disentangled himself from a halfhearted tackle and sent Van Basten clear of the last defender, poor old Bumbescu, for the fourth goal and the rest was a matter of damage limitation by Steaua and time consumption by Milan. With Internazionale close to winning the Italian championship, the citizens of Milan can relish the prospect of having both of their teams in next season's European Cup. Rotariu. THE European Cup returned to Italy for only the second time in 20 years last night when AC Milan put the Romanian army team, Steaua Bucharest, on fatigues. A close contest had been expected but the 1989 final turned out to be more of a Dutch orange parade. Two goals apiece from Ruud Gullit and Marco Van Basten in the first 46 minutes, and Steaua were gone with the wind which swirled around the Nou Camp stadium and carried the sound of Milan's third success in the tournament into the cool Catalan evening air. It was the most decisive outcome to a European Cup final since Bayern Munich's defeat of Atletico Madrid by a similar score in Brussels in the replayed 1974 final.

It was a masterly performance by Milan in every way and compared well with their rout of Real Madrid in the semifinals, a result which had ensured support from the locals among a crowd of 97,000 dominated by some 70,000 Italians. The only regret was that the Romanians totally failed to live up to their billing as an organised, disciplined team who would combat Milan's flair. In fact, Steaua's sweeper system lost most of its bristles in the first wave of Milan attacks and thereafter never cleared up the mess. Although the wind made the simplest of centres awkward to deal with, Lung, the Bucharest goalkeeper, and his defenders need not have been quite so dumbfounded the moment the ball came across in the air. After Gullit and Van Basten had scored their goals and won the match, Milan sauntered through the latter half of the game while the Romanians made only half-hearted attempts to get back into it.

With John Fashanu suffering from damaged knee ligaments, Bobby Robson called Bull into his squad yesterday and the 24-year-old striker has a good chance of playing against Scotland at Hampden Park on Saturday. Bull's arrival in the England attack would be the result of a happy combination of circum But Robson conceded that for a lot of time Chile achieved what they had set out to achieve. "They were very good at breaking up the play and stopping the flow of the game," he admitted. Paul Parker, more a marker than a natural right-back, still impressed Robson, as did Des Walker, whose speed is fast becoming essential to the middle of the back four.

Neil Webb's run of sound international performances continued biit Steve McMahon's superb finish to the season for Liverpool is putting the Nottingham Forest player's position under increasing pressure. once more after playing his first full match for England, showing a number of good touches and nearly scoring with two free-kicks, but also getting himself booked for bad-mouthing a linesman. "He let things get to him," said Robson, "and if you let that happen at this level there are plenty of players who will get you sent off." The England manager was not enamoured of Chile's tactics, the spoiling fouls and the time-wasting. "I've got no time for any player who rolls over feigning injury," he said. "Players who are really injured lie still." 60,000 three years ago appear even more of a bargain.

Tony Cottee, who looked sharper in 20 minutes as an England substitute on Tuesday than he did during the two hours of Saturday's FA Cup final, could well retain his place for the Hampden Park game. Other changes should see the old Everton pairing of Gary Stevens, at right-back, and Trevor Steven, playing on the right of midfield, restored as Robson seeks a settled framework before the World Cup qualifier against Poland at Wembley on Saturday week. This would mean Paul Gas-coigne returning to the bench Watford 1, Blackburn Rovers 1 (aet. agg: 1-1) Watford go flat Crystal Palace 2, Swindon 0 (agg: 2-1) Finally Wright on the night A continuous Hammering Stephen Blaiisy ISSUE No. 2 of the West Ham fanzine, Fortune's Always Hiding, shows a photograph of John Lyall with the caption: "If we're not careful, in a few years he could look like the man over the page." Turn over, and there is the self-same photo.

Continuity of management is often quoted to explain Liverpool's unparalleled success in the last 25 years. Kenny Dalg-lish is only their seventh manager since 1946. Lyall is only West Ham's fourth. Discuss. Not surprisingly, having seen their team relegated, a large element of West Ham supporters see the removal of Lyall as the only way forward.

They are fed up with spasmodically brilliant cup performances and being told they are too good for Lyall underpressure McCoist back in Roxburgh's reckoning Patrick Glenn AS the Scotland squad assembled in Glasgow yesterday to begin preparations for the Rous Cup, Andy Roxburgh feared that his celebrated striking partnership of Mo Johnston and Ally McCoist may be separated for the England game on Saturday. McCoist is the problem. The Rangers forward" is apparently suffering from the cumulative effect of knocks to mind and body in the demanding closing weeks of the season. He was unable to train with the others yesterday and will have a thorough physical check before Roxburgh decides his next step. Rangers withdrew McCoist as well as Richard Gough and Ian Ferguson from the international squad on Sunday, but McCoist telephoned Roxburgh the following day to say that he would be there and he was desperate to play.

Gough, seemingly suffering from a stomach virus, went with the club to Israel yesterday for an end-of-season break Roxburgh is never unhappy with what he is left to work with after the fates have done their worst; because he accepts the inevitability of withdrawals. But he did claim that it could be argued that England have suffered slightly less than the Scots with players unavailable. Roxburgh has one newcomer in his senior party, the Celtic midfielder Peter Grant. "You know, the only time Peter played against England at under-21 level he put the clamps on a fellow down there they call Gazza," remarked Roxburgh. "Interesting, isn't it?" Mick McCarthy is out of the Republic of Ireland's next two World Cup games, against Malta and Hungary.

The Celtic centre-half has gone into hospital for arthroscopic knee surgery. were caught on the break by Ian Miller's through ball to Garner, who. wriggled past Paul Miller and Jackett on the edge of the penalty area and sent a crisp shot past Coton into the left-hand corner. It was Roberts, a striker short on finesse but quite long on bustling nuisance value, who set up Watford's equaliser in the 29th minute. It looked like a case of unnecessary overcrowding when Redfearn appeared at Roberts's shoulder after the striker had done all the hard work by winning the ball just inside the Blackburn half and working his way into midfield, but the winger knew what he was doing.

Taking the ball off Roberts's toe he blasted a long-range drive high over Gennoe's left hand, the ball taking a deflection off John Millar, but such was its power that Redfearn would probably have scored anyway. Already without his main strikers, Lineker, Beardsley, Barnes and Smith, Robson has lost Fashanu who is nevertheless staying with the squad, following Tuesday's goalless draw with Chile and might have been inclined to ignore the Wimbledon player anyway. Neither Fashanu nor Nigel Clough, the other new cap, did much to promote his case as an alternative source of goals. Bull, on the other hand, has just scored three times in five down to the intensity of the crowd. I've seen it happen many times at Old Trafibrd." When Dalglish won the Double at the first time of asking in 1986 as, it should be remembered, player-manager, there were plenty of folk who nevertheless attributed the feat to Bob Paisley. "Oh yes, he's still in charge really, you know." The next year Liverpool won nothing. Then it was that Barnes and Beardsley were bought, after Rush had been sold to Juven-tus. And the title was Liverpool's again. "Oh it's easy," said the detractors.

"You just buy up all the best players." Wimbledon's Wembley was further "proof of Dalglish's managerial But let the critics talk Dalglish and Liverpool out of their just rewards this season. Of course, the Double is not yet won but nobody who saw them beat West Ham on Tuesday left with the slightest doubt that the deed would be done. For an hour West Ham matched them move for move. Blackburn, none of whose players can remember their club's First Division years, go into the play-off final against Crystal Palace next week on the strength of an away goal scored by Simon Garner after only two minutes of this pulsating but error-strewn match. Neil Redfearn equalised on the half-hour, but another 60 minutes of frantic football and extra-time failed to produce a goal. So Elton John, back on tour, badly needs to find another Rocket Man.

At Watford's last home game, a grim goalless draw against Shrewsbury earlier this month, the team had been given the slow handclap for long periods. It was a different story last night, for though only 13,000 were at Vicarage Road, it was an enthusiastic crowd. However, though Watford had opened more brightly, they Badminton Scotland carry the home flag Richard Jago In Jakarta ENGLAND'S hopes of remaining in the top group of six nations were damaged by a morale-sapping 5-0 defeat at the hands of Indonesia, as the inaugural Sudirman Cup got under way here yesterday. Defeat against the home team, in conditions that made a shirt look like sweat-drenched cellophane within minutes, was always on the cards. The manner of it, with England failing to win even a game in the five matches, was not.

Fiona Smith came nearest to it. The national women's singles champion led 10-4 and held two game points at 11-all in the first game against the teenaged Susi Susanti, but then fell apart and lost 12-11, 11-fl. England otner national cnam-pion, Darren Hall, also faded away in his 15-12, 15-7 defeat by Eddie Kurniawan.
