The Italian spent three rounds retreating before Hood's appioach, and the he landed were light ones in clinches. He made one effort, in the third round, with an upper-cut, and the ease with which the Englishman escaped it caused even Leopardi to smile. In the next lound, however.

Hood, getting his man in a corner, landed a right to the face with such force that the Italian had two teeth bioken, and went down for the full count. It was the enly notable blow struck in the course of a disappointing contest. RYE, bareV steady at c. decline: No. 2 snot 47Be.

Bridge and Miss Pollard NORTH NEGLECTED (From a Correspondent.) In the final territorial match at Wolveihamptpn last Saturday the North beat the Midlands by 5 goals to 3. Miss Foster (NorHiumbevland), who lies taken the place of Mrs. Suthersl in the North goal for the last thiee matches, again played well and made some excellent saves. Alter the first heavy defeat by the South the Noith have shown marked improvement, and won two of their three remaining torritonal matches. The toi-ward line, however, is still rather weak.

None of the North players is included in the newly selected English team, but the two Lancashire playeis Miss R. Foster (centre half-back) and Miss B. Hughes (left back) have been chosen a reserves. Both these players have had consideiable experience; Miss Foster won her international colours last season, and Miss Hughes represented the West before coming to Manchester. The English team is very much an expected, eight of the players being former internationals.

Miss Doman, the former English captain, who was dropped last season, is back in her old position of left back, and Miss Knott (right back) and Mis Anderson (goal) retain theii positions. England will, therefore, again have the well-known East defence. Miss Blaxland. ulso of East, has taken the position of left haff-back, held for seveial years by Miss Bryan. Another new player is Miss Maddox, of the West, at centie half-back.

For two season England has been looking for a really good centie-half, and Miss Maddox shows great picnnse. Miss Burners, who is an excellent right half-back, has retained her position, and completes a middle line that will be watched with gieat interest. Young Players Dropped The inclusion in the forward line of Mrs. Bridge (centre) and Miss Pollard (left inner) may be criticised by those who consider it bad policy that, after rearing from important hockey, these two well-known players should return and replace the younger and promising women who had filled their positions. It is'indeed bad luck for Miss Albright (Surrey), but undoubtedly both Mrs.

Bridge and Miss Pollard are two of the finest forwards England has known, and the-recent territorial games have proved that they are in excellent form. Miss Ellis (South), who played centre forward last year, has been moved to right inner, and Miss Tuckett (West), who was a reserve last season, will play on the right wing. The other wing Eosition will again be taken by Miss ingwood, of the West. This gives the West four representatives, the East four, the South two, and the Midlands one. marktet.

Rome, Tuesday. Mr. Henderson and Mr. Alexander are expected to-morrow night in Rome at 7 45. News of their journey to Rome is published in the late editions of this evening's press, unaccompanied by any comment except that which is published in the official communique, and which states The object of the British Ministers' visit is to transform the London Pact into a pact which France and Italy cin sign on the basis of the recent negotiations initiated by Mr.

If a five-Power agiee-ment is not reached tilings remain as they are, since Great Britain has already refused to grant the French Government a safeguarding clause which would cover eventual major construction on the part of Italy. There is every indication in such information, official and unofficial, aB it has been possible to obtain here since the news of the Ministers' visit was published, that the Italian Government is prepared to go a long way to meet the British Ministers "in their desire to compose the Franco-Italian dispute. News from A broad FRENCH ARMY STRENGTH The Official Figures Disputed GERMANY'S LIMIT War Minister's Ominous Declaration (From our own Correspondent.) Pakis, Tuesday. The Chamber began this morning the debate on the Army Estimates, and continued it this afternoon. M. Boiiilloux-Lafont, the Reporter, made a fantastic comparison of French armaments with those of other countries, which" showed that both the British and German armies were larger than the French.

He declared that French military expenditure was 16 per cent less than in 1914. A Socialist deputy, M. Chouffet, said that in reality the French expenditure on preparation for war was about 19,000.000,000 francs including sums dissimulated in various other estimates. M. Maginot contested this figure, and declared that the total expenditure was only 13,000,000,000 francs but M.

Chouffet pointed out that he had not included the expenditure on the fortification of the frontiers, and many other items. This afternoon M. Daladier, in a very effective speech, refuted the absurd statements made by M. Bouilloux-Lafont this morning. He said that, not including the fortification of the frontiers, the expenditure on the army, navy, and Air Force this year would amount to 16,400,000,000 francs The present strength of the French army on its peace footing, M.

Daladier said, was almost exactly the same as in 1912, the most important difference hctween the two organisations being that there were now 240,000 professional soldiers, Mhcreas in 1912 there were only 140,000. As regards' the expenditure, it was much larger than in 1912. M. Daladier said that if the French army was calculated in' a logical fashion that is to say, to include the whole of the metropolitan army (the army in France and that in. Africa) on the "one hand and the colonial army in the distant colonies on the other it was larger than any other army in Europe.

Moreover, in case of war it would be the whole army that would be engaged, including the reserves and the black troops. SI. Daladier demanded the revision of the Treaty of Versailles. DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE RESERVATIONS M. Maginot, the Minister of War, declared during the debate (as reported by Reuter) that "no Power signatory to the Treaty of Versailles could forgo the I'lauses which limit the armaments of Germany.

Tf Germany were able to evade those Treaty obligations we should have to increase instead of reduce our armaments. All nations cannot be placed on the same footing. It is just and necessary that the aggressors should undergo a more severe limitation than the nations who have not committed and who refuse to commit aggression. There can be no question of going buck on the military clauses of the Treaty of Versailles. With these reservations France will do all she can to make the Disarmament Conference a success." FRENCH GRANT FOR UNEMPLOYED Government Defeated (Renter's Telegram.) Paris, Tuesday.

During a debate on unemployment today the Government were defeated. but no question of confidence was involved. The Government and the Finance Committee of the Chamber had tabled a bill granting a credit of 200,000 in relief of unemployment. M. Blum (Socialist) moved an amendment to increase the grant to 8110.000.

Moscow, Tuesday. The celebration yesterday of the thirteenth anniversary of the Red Army elicited the following characteristic message from the Ail-Russian Soviet Central Executive Committee Behind the smoke 6creen of allegations of forced labour, dumping, and religious persecution proceeds a feverish arming of the capitalist States in open preparation for' a war- and blockade against the Soviet Union.

Therefore the strengthening of the fighting power of the Red Army must be the xbject of the unwavering attention of the toiling masses." A similar idea is expressed in an order published by the War Commitsar, Voroshiloff, who declares that, the successes- of- the Five-year Plan inspire "animal fear in the Imperialists."
