20 OBSERVER SUNDAY 20 NOVEMBER 1988 TOMMY HINDLEY sjorsLs) FOOTBALL the near post but Marwood's corner cleared his head and landed in the centre of the goalmouth for the swift-moving Merson. Middlesbrough occasionally discovered the accuracy to work the ball fluently up the field and Lukic was extremely fortunate to be exacdy in the right spot when Slaven struck with a sudden overhead kick. Middlesbrough finally realised that even top sides do not spurn the bounty that comes from giving the ball a good belt every now and then. The one that Lukic administered from his goalmouth in the 52nd minute bounced luckily for Merson to surge forward, hit Pallister with his first shot and then tuck the rebound past Pears with a finish none of bis team-mates could match. Until, that is, Rocastle ran at the Middlesbrough defence with the game in its last seconds.

Icorore. Arsenal: Merson (29. 52), Rocastle (89). Arsenal: Lukic; Dixon. Wlnterburn.

Thomas. Bould, Adams, Rocastle, Richardson, Smith, Msrson, Marwood. Ml ddlssb rough: Pears; Parkinson, Cooper, Mowbray, Hamilton. Pallister, Slaven, Brennan, Burke, Davenport, Ripley. AFTER England's discordant production of 'The Desert Song', Arsenal followed up yesterday by staging The Revenge of the Red Shadows, an entertaining enough piece but not the powerful drama we all expected at Highbury.

And the casting wasn't that good either. You might have thought the five Arsenal players who took part in England's sad display in Saudi Arabia would have grabbed the leading roles, if only to shake those sandy sorrows out of their systems. But Adams, Thomas, Rocastle, Smith and Marwood flickered in and out of the scene though Rocastle scored a great solo goal with the last kick of the game and it was one of the Gunners Bobby Robson forgot who stole the show. Paul Merson hardly muffed an entrance into Middlesbrough's frantic goalmouth and twice broke down a resistance that otherwise managed to somehow defy Arsenal. Only a point-blank save by Pears late in the game prevented Merson from completing a hat-trick.

a Millwall beat goes on Cup that cheers: Non League Enfield's leafy ground was packed for the visit of Orient, whose hopes Enfield exposed in fional actt PETER HAYTER 'THE CLUB no-one likes' is becoming the team no-one beats. There was only one team in this, conclusive proof if you still need it that Millwall's irrepressible early season form was no fluke, and that Newcastle's two wins almost certainly were. The goals rattled in almost at will, and certainly at fairly regular intervals. All four were set up by Teddy Sheringham, who, despite sounding like a bandleader from the Forties, orchestrated Millwall's irresistible big beat with a skill and intelligence that Newcastle could never get to grips with. Yet Sheringham is only one part of the Millwall machine.

Their strengths are that they defend well, are solid in mid-field, break quickly and shoot on sight. Their playing assets are McLeary, possibly the skinniest centre-half in the First Division, Hurlock and Cascar-ino. And of course The Den 'Millwall away' isn't exactly 'take each game as it comes Enfield. 1 sometimes bruising first half, they went gloriously ahead after 59 minutes. Orient failed to clear convincingly one of Enfield's numerous left-wing corners and when Cooper returned the ball to the danger zone, Furlong volleyed the ball firmly past Wells.

Cue delirium. It was the perfect reward for a performance which was thoroughly professional, or rather semi-professional. Most of the Enfield players former League men Cottington and Sparrow apart hold down full-time jobs. They train twice a week. Nevertheless, a measure of their comfort against opposition from a supposedly higher level is that a calf strain carried by their centre-half Howell remained undetected until he told me about it in the bar afterwards.

Indeed, had Furlong either Staffer orders SO close is the struggle at the top of the Second Division that they had to resort to alphabetical order to separate Watford and Portsmouth. At this rate Watford will be considering a change of name before the final run-in AFC Watford, perhaps, or even Atletico Watford. Portsmouth's 3-0 win over Barnsley proved just enough for them to take over the leadership from Steve Harrison's men, who needed a goal nine minutes from time by Dave amber to salvage a 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury. Blackburn, 2-1 winners at Walsall by dint of a late second goal from Andy Kennedy, are only a matter of goal difference behind them. Steve Moulden, very SSth minute Statham stroked a free kick intelligently wide of the defensive wall for Cockerill to smash.

Although it came from fully 30 yards, Leighton again only just scrambled it away for a corner. Southampton suddenly shook off what had seemed a distinct inferiority complex and were level in the 74th minute when the elegant Le Tissier found a touch of brute strength. He forced his way past Sharpe and cut in to beat the advancing, lunging Leighton. United's game so deteriorated as the two Wallace forwards in particular tormented them with runs and shots that at The Stadium Leyton Orient 1 found the target again or crossed for Sparrow when clean through in the -71st minute, a winning scoreline of 2-0 would not have flattered them. Furlong, who had been outstanding in attack alongside the elegant Francis, achieved none of the above, so the lights were dimmed for a show-stopping finale.

In response to Orient's desperate attacks, orchestrated by Comfort on the wing and characterised by Ward's surging runs through' the middle, every clearance drew a roar of relief, every save by Pape a cheer of renewed confidence, and with time running out Pape brought the house down with a twist in the ah- to punch Comfort's header over the bar which was pure Banks versus Pele, 1970. A veil should be drawn discreetly over Pane's positioning when Ward hammered his TAYLOR ance four years ago. Only one other non-League team bathed in the kudos of having vanquished fully-professional League opposition: Altrincham, who saw off their twelfth League victims in the course of an illustrious cup history by conquering Lincoln City 3-2 in Cheshire. Inside the League the biggest shock was served up at Grimsby, where four-time Cup winners and current Third Division leaders Wolves iLeogGifton. stotftfeirs recurring GnoirraGrs pulls one out of the hat THE SIGN at the entrance to Enfield's stadium, appropriately named The Stadium, denotes that this is the home not only of Enfield Town FC but also of the Starlight Room.

And so it should, for the proceeds from the latter, where last week's star attraction was that legendary performer Bob Monkhouse, fund the healthy GM Vaux-hall Conference existence of the former. It was, however, the presence, live on the pitch, of Ley-ton Orient which attracted the television cameras and a crowd of over 4,000 for the first round of the FA Cup show, and a ferociously struck equaliser from Orient's Ward seven minutes from the final curtain made sure that this one will run and run until Wednesday night's replay, at- least. Until Ward's cruel intervention, Enfield had been writing their own script. Having held their Fourth Division opponents in a lively and Pullen IT WAS Bognor Regis Town's turn to be touched by FA Cup glory yesterday. In winning 2-1 at home to Exeter City, the men from the Vauxhall Opel League reached the second round for only the second time in a 105-year history.

The result was something of a long-service award for 30-year-old Paul Pullen, the scorer of Bognor's first goal. He and his twin-brother Mick have been with the club since the age of 16. That losing feeling is becoming depressingly familiar to the Fourth Division side, who have registered a solitary DIVISION TWO Alios (2) 2 Brechin (2) 2 Lytwyn, Smith Lees, Adam Arbroath (0) 1 Stranraer (0) 0 Kerr 500 Berwick (0) 0 Queens Pk (1) 2 Hendry 350 McNamee East Fife (0) 1 Dumbarton (1) 1 Mitchell Mclver 458 Stirling (2) 3 Albion (2) 4 Grant, Wilcox uougan ou Chapman 2 (1 pen) Watson McNeil I CUP ROUND UP PETER CORRIGAN Arsenal Middlesbrough The game fell short of producing a completely dramatic afternoon because Middlesbrough, although neat and nimble, were unable to capture enough of the action. This was largely due to their curious habit of giving the ball away, especially when deep in their own territory. It is refreshing to see a side newly arrived in the First Division attempt to play it intelligently from the back.

But slapdash-ery when attempting such refinement is a fatal flaw. One typical example of the urge to play the ball short led to Arsenal's first goal. Pallister had die chance to clout the ball out of bis penalty area but elected instead to slide a cultured pass to Slaven. While Slaven was deciding how he could further embellish the move, he was robbed and a corner forced. Bould took everyone's attention with a giant leap at RICK SHEARMAN Millwall 4 Newcastle United 0 Brian', and it will take an excellent side to take points away from here.

Certainly Newcastle never looked like it. Their manager's strengths are that McCreery and Roeder will never stop trying for him, that McDonald might hold the ball up occasionally, and the consolation that at least he's not Bobby Robson. His team were a classic case of No Confidence errors here, errors there, and once the first goal went in, it was all over bar the counting. Until that first goal, Newcastle looked as. if they might get something.

Pressing their full-backs forward, they cut off the service to Millwall's two wingers, and McDonald, making his debut after his transfer from Holland, put in some useful touches. Typically for a losing side, they saw O'Brien's deflected shot trickle agonisingly past a post in the opening exchanges. It was an error almost as culpable which cost Southampton the equaliser nine minutes later. Central defender Moore and one of the three Wallace brothers, full back Raymond, seemed to be debating over who should clear a ball hobbling between them when Robson pounced with tigerish opportunism and neither recovered in time to catch the captain as he strode on to score with a swashbuckling sweep of his left foot. Robson spent most of his time in closer than usual touch with his back four, leaving the more adventurous midfield work to Blackmore, whose eye-catching long-range blasts Scarboro (0) 2 Brook.

And also, perhaps, why he didn't get around to picking Parker against aaudi Arabia last Wednesday. Both were outstanding in a match short on accurate shooting but otherwise entertaining enough.

Liverpool's travelling contingent were naturally delighted and even QPR's followers put their hands together at the end in appreciation of a breezy 90 minutes containing plenty of good things. Most were provided by Liverpool who are starting to play that lovely, instinctive stuff again, moving into space in the certain knowledge that the ball will arrive, smoothly. That Aldridge's goal just before the half hour was their only reward was due largely to the speedy covering and sure tackling of Parker, ably, aided by McDonald who overcame an over-robust start which earned him a booking in the ninth minute. Most of the problems to the home defence were posed by Beardsley, roaming the gaps behind his front-runners Aldridge and Rush. Houghton and McMahon were only marginally less impressive, and once they had sorted themselves out after 20 minutes or so they performed excellently until it came to finishing.

This was partly due to the queer state of the pitch.
