and hails the consistency, team spirit and managerial mastery that took Arsenal to the top in the Championship desire of Barnes, the central fount of its creativity, to move abroad. But Liverpool need not buy time at an undue price if McMahon and Whelan return fit and fresh in August. Their most pressing need is for a central defender half as accomplished as the retired Alan Hansen, and Mark Wright, who fits that description, is available. Provided Graham does not get to him first. To state that one wishes to emulate Herbert Chapman may appear hazardous, but Graham is oh the way.

Though much credit must go to background figures, such as Steve Burtenshaw, who have supplied a solid base of homegrown talent, Graham's ability to blend and fertilise has put the club in a healthier position than in the Double days.
