and hails the consistency, team spirit and managerial mastery that took Arsenal to the top in the Championship desire of Barnes, the central fount of its creativity, to move abroad. But Liverpool need not buy time at an undue price if McMahon and Whelan return fit and fresh in August. Their most pressing need is for a central defender half as accomplished as the retired Alan Hansen, and Mark Wright, who fits that description, is available. Provided Graham does not get to him first. To state that one wishes to emulate Herbert Chapman may appear hazardous, but Graham is oh the way.

Though much credit must go to background figures, such as Steve Burtenshaw, who have supplied a solid base of homegrown talent, Graham's ability to blend and fertilise has put the club in a healthier position than in the Double days. Comparisions are bound to be imprecise, but Graham's contention that the current side is 'far better' than the one for which he played is supported by figures: they score more goals, and concede fewer. Again, defensive organisation and team spirit are crucial, but there is more tactical flexibility about this Arsenal, especially, let it be noted, in attack; the third forward had even more relevance to the campaign than the third centre-back. The trouble with Arsenal is that, in discussing them, you do not dwell on mid-field. Why should you when they themselves, for all the natural elegance of Paul Davis, do not? But this is where the key to the future lies.

The European Cup, as Liverpool learned, calls for rather more of what Graham, magnanimous in his moment of triumph at Anfield two years ago, called the 'quality things'. Recently, in outlining his ultimate vision of Arsenal, he deferred not to Liverpool but the Milan who dominated Europe in their absence. does not recall from his own time as a player, although in truth a thread of complacency ran through the entire Dalglish era; swathed in success, it went almost unnoticed as the country developed a genuine appreciation for the artistry of Barnes, Peter Beardsley and the rest. Souness promises change, but Arsenal, for all the bristling esprit de corps that brought two titles (and was less evident when they finished a poor fourth in the intervening season), will surely not be allowed to set the entire Anfield agenda. The main defects in Souness's inheritance are age and the 'I loved watching them.

They bored the pants off people, pushing up to the halfway line actually sprinting! and played wonderful football as well. I'd like to extend our patches of attractive football. We'll certainly be trying to play from the back a bit more next Well, Tony Adams will never be a Baresi, but Nigel Winter-burn does have the odd touch of Maldini about him and Anders Limpar played Donadoni quite convincingly for half the season. If you narrow your eyes and stretch a point you can see aspects of Van Hasten in the way Alan Smith combines goal-scoring with line-leading. But in all seriousness there was a pass from young Kevin Campbell on Monday night, curved with the outside of the right foot for Smith, who scored, upon which I have never seen GuUit improve.

By this rime next year, keeping Campbell in England could be Graham's big problem. A final word about the docking rof two. points after the Old Trafford brawl. I remain convinced that the FA's policy was attacked on the flanks. The ensuing campaign bore this out.

Liverpool never lost a match when both McMahon and Whelan played; indeed, it is nearly 14 months since they have done so in the League. Nor should there be any argument with Souness's assertion that Liverpool remain a superior 'footballing' side. Despite the absence of McMahon and Whelan, they gave a display in the first half at Leeds only last month that was infinitely more sophisticated than anything Arsenal have produced, even if a lack of resilience led to their hanging on for a 5-4 victory. It was a similarly enthralling match for the spectator, a 4-4 draw with Everton, that preceded Kenny Dalglish's resignation as manager. 'Passing the ball and move-: ment off says Souness.

'That's what I understand good football is all Quite. Liverpool have also played more bad football than usual because they have been unable to prevent events from running out of control. The. new manager talks of an attitude problem, an acceptance of defeat he GRAEME SOUNESS'S remark that it was Liverpool who lost the Championship, rather than Arsenal who won, ought not to be taken too seriously. He spoke in the immediate aftermath of defeat, when managers tend to be full of wishful hulking.

Arsenal secured the title having lost only at Chelsea, where Liverpool lost by a greater margin. They beat Liverpool home and away. They are champions to their fingertips, as David Seaman emphasised with his spectacular late save from Gary Owers at Sunderland last weekend, a more convincing unit than that which dramatically snatched the Championship on Merseyside two years ago. This is not to deny that Liverpool might have stayed on top but for the removal of their kernel, the midfielders Steve McMahon and Ronnie Whelan, injured in successive derbies against Everton in February. A few days before the season began, George Graham sat in his Highbury office and ventured the opinion that the pah-were 'vital' to Liverpool's system in providing stability while John Barnes and Ray Houghton I laaria'a'llgill TmmW Z.

rl irarrn lWHMHInniHHMmHK.HBKJ Graham: Good mixer misguided, that a combination of escalating fines and suspensions would have avoided a dangerous precedent (to illustrate by hypothesis: had the trouble between Sunderland and Wimbledon players a few weeks back been a little worse, the FA would logically have been obliged to deduct points, hastening Sunderland's slide towards relegation while mid-table Wimbledon could laugh off their punishment). But at least, by their firmness, the FA helped Graham to channel the aggression he encourages in his players. Provoked recently at Southampton, they concentrated on then-game. The FA did Arsenal a favour. And Arsenal in turn did us all a favour by not finishing a point behind Liverpool having earned more on the field than the champions.

We would never have heard the last of that.
