MINORITY LEADER'S ARREST Taken in the Polish Corridor r A STORY OF BEATING (From our own Correspondent.) Berlin, Tuesday. The leader of the Polish White Russian minority, Taraszkrewicz, was arrested in mysterious -circumstances -circumstances on the 16th of this month. The account I have received from a usually reliable source is as follows: Taraszki ewicz was travelling across the Polish " corridor "' between Danzig and Manenburg in a tram on which, by. special arrangement, a Polish visa is not required. .At Tszew (the Dirschau) - Polish policemen boarded the train and ordered him to leave it. He refused, so they entered, his compartment and dragged him out. Her was then - taken to the nolice quarters at Tszew. and, badly beaten in the presence of several 'other passengers. passengers. I have been unable to obtain authoritative confirmation from any (Jerman source of this account, although from one German source 1 leam that "it is believed" here that Taraszkrewicz was arrested by the Danzig poRce. But it is hardly credible that the Danzig police would hand ..the. leader of the national minority over to the Polish authorities. One thing seems to be certain he is now in a Polish prison. Former Sentence and Escape Taraszkrewicz is a man of considerable considerable emirence. He was a lecturer of the.Unifersity at St. Petersburg.before the war. He was one of the awakeners of the White Russian national conscience. conscience. He translated Virgil- Virgil- into White Russian and wrote a numbei of works on the- the- White Russian language. He was the leader" of the Hromada, a White' Russian peasant party, of- of- Radical tendencies., It rapidly acquired a membership of over 100,000, but -.was -.was then suppressed by the Polish authorities. The leaders. Taraszkrewicz amongst them, were tried at Vilna in the spring of 1930. and were sentenced to a long term of imprisonment. An effort made bv the Warsaw authorities to reach an ajri'ec- ajri'ec- mcno wi&n xaraszarewicz, as tne most influential of the White Russian leaders, led to his release, but the effort failed and Taraszkrewicz only eluded rearrest by escaping to Danzig.
